DHS Considers Reality Show Where Immigrants Compete for U.S. Citizenship
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reportedly evaluating a proposal for a reality television show in which immigrants would compete in challenges inspired by American traditions for a chance to win U.S. citizenship. The concept, pitched by Canadian-born producer Rob Worsoff, known for his work on Duck Dynasty, includes segments such as a NASA-themed rocket launch, a gold rush competition in San Francisco, and an auto assembly contest in Detroit. The winner would be sworn in as a U.S. citizen in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
DHS officials have confirmed that the proposal is in the early stages of evaluation and has not yet been approved. A spokesperson emphasized that the agency receives numerous pitches annually, most of which are not pursued. The idea has sparked criticism on social media, with some likening it to dystopian fiction. Critics argue that turning the naturalization process into a televised competition is insensitive and exploitative, particularly under an administration known for its aggressive immigration policies.
