Maharashtra to Require Parking Proof for New Vehicle Registrations

The Maharashtra government will soon mandate proof of a designated parking space for registering new vehicles in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that buyers must show valid parking documentation to civic bodies before getting their vehicles registered. This move aims to ease growing traffic congestion and parking issues in Mumbai, which has one of the highest vehicle densities in India. Developers will also be required to provide parking spaces for new flats as part of revised development rules.

The government is planning to build more parking facilities, including those under recreational areas, in coordination with the Urban Development Department. A pod taxi system is also being proposed in Mira-Bhayandar and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to improve last-mile connectivity. The policy aligns with global urban planning standards and follows similar initiatives introduced in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi.
