Russia, Ukraine, Turkey Begin Peace Talks in Istanbul; Ceasefire on Agenda
Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have resumed in Istanbul after a meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Russia’s delegation, led by Vladimir Medinsky, concluded late Thursday. According to Turkey’s foreign ministry, further discussions are scheduled for Friday, potentially involving trilateral and quadrilateral formats, with Turkey, Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his delegation, led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, will push for a ceasefire. While welcoming Turkey’s support and President Erdogan’s stance on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, Zelenskyy expressed concern over Russia’s lack of seriousness, citing the lower-level composition of its delegation. Despite doubts, Ukraine is proceeding with the talks in respect of Turkish and U.S. diplomatic efforts.
