World Bank Chief Ajay Banga Clarifies Role Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
World Bank President Ajay Banga has distanced the institution from speculation regarding its involvement in resolving the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, stating that the World Bank’s role is merely as a facilitator. Speaking in New Delhi, Banga emphasized that the bank would not intervene in political or military issues between the two nations, noting, “We have no role to play beyond that of a facilitator.” His comments come amid rising concerns about the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which India recently suspended following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
Banga’s visit to India, coinciding with heightened military tensions between the two countries, raised questions about the World Bank’s potential involvement in brokering a deal. However, the World Bank chief’s visit was primarily focused on investment opportunities in Uttar Pradesh. India’s suspension of the IWT, a 65-year-old agreement crucial for Pakistan’s water supply, has sparked strong reactions from Islamabad. India defended its actions, pointing out that the treaty was signed in a “spirit of goodwill and friendship” that no longer exists in the current political climate.
